Requirement 2 - Your school must have simple and effective safeguarding systems / procedures.

We expect your school to have systems that reflect your particular cohort of students and the local context. The list below is not exhaustive nor is it but general expectations of procedures include:

• Children absent from education

• Referral to your LA, including emergency situations

• Allegation management including low-level concerns

• Safeguarding Training for the whole school including governors and trustees

• Visits and Trips

• Filtering and Monitoring

• Your school’s processes for staff reporting concerns they have about a child/children

These systems and procedures must be documented in writing and made accessible to all staff members.

Requirement 3 - Your school must have a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).

All staff, children, volunteers and your wider school community including Governors / Trustees and parents must know who the school DSL is and how to contact them. In addition, everyone should know what the DSL role includes – for example, everyone should know:

• The DSL is the first point of contact for any safeguarding concern.

• The DSL is responsible for training, liaising with the LA and other statutory bodies.

• The DSL is responsible for implementing filtering and monitoring systems

Contact details should be available on the school website and be around the school site.

If your school has a DSL team for example with DDSLs - their details should be available and everyone should know their role too.

Requirement 4 - Code of conduct.

The expectation is that your school will have a Code of Conduct for staff and volunteers and a behaviour policy for students. These do not need to be complicated but as a minimum must include:

• Your schools’ expectations of everyone’s behaviour towards each other including bullying, equality and harassment.

• Your schools’ expectations around online behaviour including on photography and social media.

Requirement 5 - Your school must have safe recruitment practices.

Your school must action all the safer recruitment expectations included in Keeping Children Safe in Education. For example, your Single Central Record must be complete for all staff including temporary and cover staff, visitors, contractors, governors and others. It must also include a record of all the Right to Work checks.

Each part of the recruitment itself must be in line with statutory expectations. For example:

• Ensuring panel members are trained in safer recruitment.

• Enhanced DBS with barred list checks are complete for roles that involve regulated activity.

• Recruitment interviews involve questions that shed light on the candidate’s attitude to, and understanding of, safeguarding.

• References should not be pro forma.

Requirement 6 - Safeguarding training.

All Staff (and governors) should receive safeguarding training including the relevant parts of KCSIE and this should be updated by the DSL.

DSLS must update their training in line with KCSIE expectations – for example, updated DSL level training annually and prevent training contextualised locally.

Your schools should keep a record of all staff training.

Requirement 7 - Your school must engage with parents or another responsible adult.

Parents must be given information about your schools’ safeguarding and related policies. It is expected that your school will also engage parents with other safeguarding issues such as online safety through for example newsletters or events in school.

Parents should know how to contact a DSL if needed, this may be information found on the school website and in induction paperwork.

Requirement 8 - Your school must have systems and procedures to listening to students, effectively capture their voice, and empower them to express their views.

Children and young people need to be listened to.

Your system for engaging students in safeguarding and capturing their voice will be particular to your school. Schools should as a minimum ensure students:

• Know what safeguarding is and what it means for them including all aspects of online harm.

• Know what behaviour is - and isn’t acceptable at school and online.

• Know they’ll always be listened to and taken seriously if they have concerns about their well-being. Having systems that capture the child’s voice is crucial.

• Know who the DSL and, if there is a team, the safeguarding team are and how to contact them if they ever need to.

• You regularly enforce the message that their safety and well-being is important.

Requirement 9 - Is your School registered with the Charity Commission? If so, there are three extra requirements you’ll need to fulfil.

1. Risk assessments must be in place for anyone your charity interacts with, including the sites you are based out of.

2. Staff must be protected and the Club has policies for whistleblowing, discrimination and harassment.

3. Link trustee and safeguarding as a standing item on the Club’s Board Agenda.
